Actions unacceptable, says Crisis Centre

THE Fiji Women's Crisis Centre says the questioning of a Fiji Times journalist by police in relation to a story she wrote is downright unacceptable.

FWCC co-ordinator Shamima Ali said they described police action as such because media freedom was still alive, and secondly, the journalist in question is pregnant and was made to wait at the police station from morning until midday.

Police officers took Fiji Times reporter Serafina Silaitoga to the police station regarding her story in which Labasa businessman Charan Jeath Singh spoke about how he was aware that interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry was asked to resign from Cabinet.

Ms Silaitoga was taken by police from her home yesterday morning while her family watched and released later in the day.

"This is just a bully boy tactic to intimidate her," she said.

Ms Ali said this action by the police was totally uncalled for and it violated Ms Silaitoga's human rights and her right to be left in peace in her state.

"In a state of pregnancy a woman is entitled to rest and be in an environment which is peaceful to her state of mind and that of her baby," said Ms Ali.

She said having to go through such an incident could have a negative impact on her state of mind and not to mention the effect on her children who watched their mother being taken by police.
