Letter to the Editor (F/T) on Fiji Youth Council April 2008
I AM still coming to grips with Rupeni Silimaibaus claim that youths in Fiji support the Peoples Charter. I understand the PYFFI to be an indigenous organisation.
How then can it speak for me, a part-European? This is where we need a united youth body. I support the call by Peter Waqavonovono (FT Online 21/4) for the establishment of a Youth Council.
The YPCN rightly states that with a Youth Council, a strong collective voice and decision can be made on issues like the charter.
A Youth Council can stand for all youths regardless of race and religious belief. Here in the US where I study, we have a National Youth Council that is vocal on a variety of issues from the war in Iraq to immigrant rights.
Youths can write to the council and request investigation, report injustices, make inquiries, invite to address assemblies and sit on public boards. The council is accountable for their obligations to youths.
Lets get one started in Fiji soon.
One good thing that can come out from this Youth Council is that opportunists wont appear out of nowhere and lay false claim to our representation.
