THE Young Peoples Concerned Network has called on Fiji Human Rights Commission chairperson Dr Shaista Shameem to resign for her inaction in human rights violation cases.
The YPCN said in a statement that it had asked for Dr Shameems resignation a month ago and was renewing that call based on the fact that FHRC had failed to act on the human rights violations but saw fit to comment on pronouncements, reports and activities about the interim Government.
I said the silence and inaction of the FHRC in relation to the deportation of The Fiji Times publisher Evan Hannah was suspicious.
The YPCN further claims the interim Government and the FHRC had embarked on a personal vendetta to intimidate and malign Fiji's press.
They do not have the political will to protect and encourage the freedom of the press - and have in fact been critical, secretive and contentious towards the media, said the YPCN.
