Pacific Youth Council to provide support for youth development

FIJI TIMES : Wednesday, July 02, 2008

The newly re-established secretariat of the Pacific Youth Council (PYC) is proposed to provide much needed support for youth development in the Pacific region.

AusAIDs Pacific Leadership Program (AusAID-PLP) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the PYC to revive its Secretariat, which has been dormant for almost 10 years.

SPCs Human Development Programme (HDP) Adviser for Youth, Rose Maebiru said the re-establishment of the secretariat is overdue.

The secretariat hasnt been in operation since 2000 because of lack of resources. This revival will enable the PYC to actively pursue its advocacy, network-building and information-sharing role, which will directly benefit young people themselves and their supporters in the region."

The MOU is one of the outcomes of a youth stakeholders meeting held at SPC headquarters in Noumea earlier this year.

Ms Maebiru said the establishment of the PYC secretariat will help motivate National Youth Councils and young people to take a more dynamic role in national development.

Youth leaders need strong leadership skills if they are to support other young people to become active citizens, she said.

Ms Maebiru said one of the first tasks of the secretariat will be to update the membership status of National Youth Councils and to support their strengthening.
