Press Release - Youths pay tribute to Sadikuini

The purported brutal slaying of 14 month old Sadikuini Yalewavukivuki by her father on the 8th of August 2009 has shocked the Young Peoples Concerned Network. This death comes on the week of International Youth Day which will be celebrated on the 15th of August 2009 and there are celebrations scheduled in certain parts of Fiji.

Young People in Fiji are usually the victims of violence and injustice, and what is more depressing is that the perpetrators of these acts are predominately known to them. “The death of Sadikuini is a reflecting of the society we now leave in, where people do not value their mental health and that of their loved ones – it is also a reflection of how our parents and communities value their young people” says YPCN President Peter Waqavonovono.

“Fiji as a society will fall apart if we do not take action and promote healthier family relationships and a commitment to mental well being” adds Waqavonovono. “One in every five adults will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime and the 2001 World Health Report released by the World Health Organization revealed that ten of the world’s most disabling conditions were mental disorders, therefore Mental Health issues in Fiji need to be immediately addressed” Waqavonovono adds.

The YPCN hopes that Sadikuini’s father can be treated humanely and that his actions that resulted in her death be investigated thoroughly without any emotional interference. “During times like this, the whole of Fiji needs to be compassionate and seek an answer for any form of strange behaviors rather than call for harsher penalties or a return to the death penalty; lets look with optimism at the rehabilitation of high profile crimes committed against young people” says Waqavonovono.
