YPCN supports new rights body plan

The Young People's Concerned Network supports the establishment of a new Human Rights Body to replace the Fiji Human Rights Commission.

The YPCN says recent comments made by Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi that such a body could be established is a breath of fresh air and a sign of hope for human rights activism in Fiji.

It is inevitable that a body is set up to counter and also to pick up where the Human Rights Commission has failed," a statement said.

One of the roles of this new Human Rights Body should be to concile and investigate human rights abuses that occurred after December 5 2006, because many people have refused to hand in their statements and reports to the FHRC because of its drector' approach to the rule of law and human rights violations."
